Oily & Acne-Prone Skin, Causes & Care

Different skin types require different products and routines. Today's focus is on those of us fighting against oily skin. Not sure what skin type you have? Check out our post on Identifying Your Skin Type.

Potential Causes and Side Effects

While sometimes it is just pure genetics, there are a few different factors that can contribute to oily skin on the face and body. Some of the most common contributors to oily skin include things such as climate/environment, diet, hormones, age, stress, and product usage.

Oily skin is often associated with large pores. These two go together because large pores allow for extra sebum production, leading to oily skin. Unfortunately, having large pores makes you more susceptible to acne and blackheads. This is due to the fact that large pores become clogged very easily by things like dirt, makeup, and yes, oil.

Best Soaps for Oily Skin

I get asked this question a lot, and while there are recommendations I can make as to which ingredients to look for in your facial soap, everyone's skin is different. Some may need to use soaps intended for oily skin on a daily basis, and some may only need them once or twice a week. When starting any new skin routine, I always recommend starting slowly and working up to where you are the most comfortable with your skin. Try using some of these soaps once a week for 2-4 weeks, and then gradually increase the frequency of use over time until you are seeing desirable results.

Charcoal Soap

Soaps with activated charcoal are highly beneficial for those with oily skin. Charcoal has many amazing characteristics that include the ability to pull oils and toxins from the skin. Read more on activated charcoal here.

Clay Soaps

Kilted Suds has many varieties of clay soaps, but if you are just starting to figure out what works for you, I would recommend starting out with an unscented bar soap. These soaps are very mild soaps, containing different types of clay. Bentonite and French Green clays are known for their ability to pull oil and toxins from the skin in a way similar to activated charcoal.

Acne Specific Soaps

Kilted Suds' Detox Bar Soap is specifically formulated for oily, acne-prone skin. It contains ingredients like charcoal and tea tree for a wonderful oil-busting soap!
